With the dissolvement of Lealta & Esperanza de Luz, the San Diego colorguard community was left without many Independent performance options. So in 2012 Ben Contreras, Sarah Abdulal, Ken White, Laura Larson, John Cordova, Miah Gallardo, & Richard Sim got together to found Vox Artium Winterguard as a place for San Diego youth to continue performing. Since its inception Vox has been committed to providing a nurturing environment for the next generation—this means developing its members not just as performers, but as people. The name Vox Artium was chosen by the Charter members; it is Latin for “Voice of the Arts.”

2019 • Will You..?

“Pink roses are for love hopeful and expectant, but the red roses, ah the red roses are for love triumphant!”

The program takes the audience throught the journey a lover feels in a single night. First, the troubling uncertainty—and the pivotal question that the majority of show revolves around: “will you still love me tomorrow?” The second part deals with rosey feeling of infatuation and hope. Finally, the red rose of love appears and certainty is found: “he loves me.”

2018 • Two Steps Away

"I don't understand my life, or the version that chose you…"

Life is turbulent, uncertain, and short. In any situation we are two steps away from greatness or loss. This program highlights this thin line we walk: how close we are to achieving our goals or breaking down completely.

2017 • In Times Of Chaos

"The earth is a slowly rotting apple... kindness is the cheapest way to cure that, and it has priceless aftermath."

In a world filled with needless despair, factions at odd with one another do nothing but pointing fingers. This program illustrates how we ought  we ought to build a kinder and braver world for all, instead of letting hate divide us.

2016 • Maybe I...

"You were always on my mind…"

Dwelling on the past is a common theme that spans across all of human history—reflecting on lost love and how things could have gone another way is a torture familiar to many. The ache of wondering "what if I'd done this differently?" is a feeling so pervasive, it's as natural as the beat of a heart.

Life is about finding your vision of the future and surrounding yourself with the right group of people who will support you in brining it to fruition. Find your voice and sing your song so people can hear it.

2014 • Beauty is…

"…In the eye of the beholder"

The first part of this triptych program is about spiritual beauty, and the importance of finding it. The second part is about the beauty within—which we all possess—and tapping into it. The third part is about finding beauty in others, because everyone is beautiful in their own way.

2013 • The Race

“Look at us always rushed, always running around... I guess that's why they call it the human race.”

In life we are constantly in a hurry to get from place to place, we seldom slow down to appreciate the wonderful world around us. This show is about learning to enjoy life—to notice the little things and to realize that life isn’t a race.

2012 • Bound for Freedom

Vox Artium’s debut program was somewhat autobiographical. When Lealta folded, San Diego was left with few independent options. A small group of passionate individuals got together to form Vox Artium. Bound For Freedom expressed how one feels trapped in a bad situation and the choices that are made in order to get out of it.

When I think of Vox Artium, I think of growth, how far I’ve come as a performer, and how far this organization has come with all of the hard work everyone over the years has put in to make it what it is today.
